Monthly Meetings

The meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the month, February through to November.

All meetings start at 6:30 pm with a ‘cuppa’. The invited speaker starts their presentation at 7:00 pm. See upcoming events below for speaker and venue details. After the speaker there is usually time for questions.

Members may take the floor for ‘show and tell’ about any plants they have brought along.

There is a sales table open before and after the meeting.

February 26

Sarah C’s Bees
Venue: The Link, 4 Te Aroha St, Hamilton East

Sarah Cross, from Sarah C’s Bees will bring an educational and enlightening talk about honeybees in NZ.  Her decade spent in the apiculture science industry as well as working with hobby beekeepers on a daily basis has given her the knowledge and skills to teach hundreds of people around Aotearoa the importance of bees as pollinators.

Clandon Daffodils
Piwakawaka Room, The Pavilion, Hamilton Gardens

Ian Riddell will speak about a year in a life of a daffodil grower.  He will also share his perspective about soil micro-organisms and the products Rootella/Superzyme and Trichomax.  This talk will be preceded by a short Annual General Meeting.

Pest Plants

Annemarie Robb from the Biosecurity Office of the Waikato Regional Council will speak about plant pests in Hamilton City, what her role is and the work of the WRC.   She’ll also cover what the public can do to help eliminate or reduce plant pests.

Neil Curgenven from the Waikato Historical Society will talk about a couple of heritage homes that had great gardens in their day, some of his efforts in horticulture and an example they had thrust upon them in Chartwell.

Permaculture

Finn Mackesy, father, homesteader, founder of the Auckland Permaculture Workshop, Transition Point Chevalier and Resilio Studio will speak about deep ecology and permaculture.

Fairfield Project

Roger Cox will speak about the work of the Kukutaaruhe Trust in education, gully restoration and its community garden.

Tuscany Statues

Glen Morris’s company makes crushed marble statuary, fountains and custom work for their clients which recently included Hamilton Gardens for the new Medieval Garden.

Christmas Floral Creations
The Link, 4 Te Aroha St, Hamilton East

Jules Boonen is a floral artist, although growing plants is her first love. She will give a wreath demonstration and ideas from your garden for Christmas table displays and gifts.

Hoyas

Margaret Campbell will speak about the care and growing of Hoyas which have become a highly sought after plant and have come a long way from the plants our members will remember.

Bonsai
The Link Room, The Pavilion, Hamilton Gardens

Peter Mudie of the Hamilton Bonsai Club will give an introduction to the ancient Japanese art of Bonsai.  The illustrated talk will look at what a Bonsai is (and isn’t), its history, commonly used species, some of the tools and techniques used and the important care and maintenance required to keep them thriving, finishing with how they are displayed.
